_____________________________________________________________________
∑ Chess 5 is a very strong Macintosh chess program with an intuitive user interface and many
features. See the included manual Manual.html for details or visit the ∑ Chess web-site:
http://www.sigmachess.com
The author Ole K. Christensen can be contacted via e-mail at:
ole@sigmachess.com or ole@kagi.com
1) ∑ CHESS 5 LITE & PRO
∑ Chess 5 comes in two different versions: ∑ Chess 5 Lite and ∑ Chess 5 Pro.
∑ Chess 5 Lite is freeware and can be downloaded from the ∑ Chess web-site
http://www.sigmachess.com. Certain high-end features from the commercial version are either
disabled or limited in this free version. Nevertheless, it's a complete, full-strength chess
program with many features; it's not just a demo. If you're a casual chess player without the need
for special features, chances are that ∑ Chess 5 Lite will do just fine.
∑ Chess 5 Pro is not freeware, but a full featured commercial product. You must pay the $15
fee in order to register and become a legal owner of this version (see below for details on how to
register). Before deciding to buy and upgrade to the Pro version, we recommend that you stick
with ∑ Chess 5 Lite for a while, and get familiar with the program. This way you won't end up
paying for something that really wasn't what you expected.
The division of ∑ Chess 5 into Lite and Pro versions resembles the shareware concept in many
ways, but there are some important differences:
• The Lite version is time-unlimited freeware: You can use it for as long as you like, not just for
e.g. 30 days as for shareware products.
• Although some features are disabled/limited in the Lite version, it is still a complete,
full-strength chess program.
• When/if you upgrade to the commercial Pro version by paying the small $15 fee, you'll not only
relieve your conscience (after all) and make the author of ∑ Chess happy :-), you will also
benefit from all the new features which were disabled/limited in the Lite version.
2) HOW TO REGISTER & UPGRADE TO ∑ CHESS 5 PRO
The price for upgrading to ∑ Chess 5 Pro is only $15. Registration and payment is handled via
the internet payment service Kagi (www.kagi.com), and can be done in two ways:
• Register online on the secure Kagi server at https://order.kagi.com/?1CU. Only payment by
credit card is accepted.
• Start the Register ∑ Chess 5 Pro application, fill out the registration form and send it to
Kagi: If you are paying by credit card, you can send the form via e-mail (to sales@kagi.com)
or fax (to +1 510 652-6589). Payments sent via e-mail are processed within 3 to 4 days,
whereas payments via fax take up to 10 days. If you are paying with cash or USD check you
need to print the registration form and send it to the address included on the form.
In all cases, once your payment has been processed you will receive a confirmation e-mail from
Kagi. A few days later you will receive another e-mail from the author of ∑ Chess containing a
unique Serial Number and a personal License Key. In order to upgrade to ∑ Chess 5 Pro, you
then simply click the "Upgrade" button in the ∑ Chess 5 About dialog and enter this license
information. From then on ∑ Chess 5 will run in "Pro" mode with the full feature list enabled!
All future updates to ∑ Chess 5 Pro are provided free of charge for owners of ∑ Chess 5 Pro.
You simply need to download the new version 5.x.x and re-enter your license information.
3) SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
∑ Chess 5 requires an Apple Macintosh or MacOS compatible meeting the following
requirements:
• Processor : Any PowerPC
• System Software : Mac OS 7.5 or later. Native (Carbon) compatibility with
Mac OS X will come in a later version.
• Monitor : 640 x 480 resolution or higher with at least 256 colours or grays.
However "Thousands of colors" or more is needed to use the 3D board.
• Memory : At least 3 MB, but 5 - 10 Mb or more is recommended in order to take full
advantage of the transposition tables and the 3D board.
4) LIMITED/DISABLED FEATURES IN THE LITE VERSION
Various features of interest to serious chess players are limited or disabled in the freeware
Lite version:
• Collections can contain a maximum of 1000 games.
• Opening/position libraries cannot be edited.
• Only the KQKR and KBNK endgame databases are included. The commercial Pro version
contains several other 4-piece endings.
• Automatic game annotation/analysis are disabled for collections.
• Diagrams are not printed when printing collections/online chess books.
• Transposition tables are limited to 10 MB, whereas the commercial Pro version can handle
transposition tables up to a size of 160 MB.
• At most three windows can opened simultaneously.
• Monitor mode is not available.
5) CHANGE HISTORY
Version 5.1.3 adds some new features and fixes a few bugs in version 5.1.2:
• Support for custom piece sets and boards. See the "Read me!" files in the new "Plug-ins" folder.
• The ECO code field in the game info is now set automatically when playing new moves.
• The Fischer clock now lets you manually set the increment (yes, I should have done this a long
time ago!)
• Fixed a bug in the ExaChess protocol: No longer appends an "EP" suffix to en passant moves.
• Fixed a bug in the ExaChess protocol: Now always uses English piece letters regardless of the
current Piece Letters language setting.
• Fixed a bug in the Position Library editor, where ECO codes/comments would in rare cases
disappear.
• Fixed a bug in the engine where Sigma Chess would in rare cases announce mate in a
negative number of moves!
• The "Rate Game..." feature should no longer "lock" (if the previous game was resigned by the
player).
Version 5.1.2 fixes a few more bugs in version 5.1.1:
• Fixed a bug where Sigma Chess would in rare cases confuse a stale mate with a mate.
• Sigma would in some cases accept draw offers in any position (if its search terminated
on the first move of a new iteration, e.g. depth 6/0).
• Initial ELO rating is now reset properly.
• Average opponent rating no longer shows as -1 if first game is lost.
• When Rate Game requires strength/level to be set, these dialogs are now automatically
opened for the user.
• The game record and annotation editor now wraps text consistently.
• Monitor mode is now "refreshed" when double-clicking in the move list.
• The annotation editor now adjusts the scrollbar properly when resizing.
• The annotation editor now clears the caret properly when replacing with "shorter" text.
• Commas are no longer used to separate player name & ELO.
• Better handling of errors in pasted games.
• The games of the World Championship Match 2000 between Kasparov and Kramnik are
included (in the "Collections" folder).
Version 5.1.1 fixes a few bugs in version 5.1:
• Fixed a bug with certain mate in 2 problems, where Sigma Chess would need a 3 or 4 ply search
in order to find the mate.
• Fixed a bug where Sigma Chess would in certain rare cases terminate the search after the first
iteration and then play a complete silly move.
• Fixed a bug in "Monitor Mode" that caused Sigma Chess to crash/freeze in certain cases.
Version 5.1 is a minor update with the following changes from version 5.0:
• Full ExaChess 2.0 support (score/best line, annotations, new time controls).
• No longer freezes when receiving a "long" move list from ExaChess.
• No longer uses too much time in ExaChess's secs/move time controls.
• Analyze game/collection now stores the analysis AFTER each move instead of before.
• Fixed a bug in analyze game/collection: It didn't skip matching analysis if requested.
• Analyze game/collection and Copy Analysis now uses SAN format.
• Changed default annotation/analysis format parameters.
• EPD files can now be opened/imported just like PGN files (if the file name ends with ".epd").
• When pasting EPD positions the optional tags (id, am, bm) are now read properly.
• Added extra keyboard short cuts for prev/next collection game (control + left/right arrow).
• Score for library moves are now shown as "book" (as in ExaChess).
• Sigma 4.0 "Standard" board (butter) re-included.
• Sigma 4.0 colour scheme "Forest" re-included (but now renamed "Leprechaun" after my
favourite Macintosh puzzle game!).
• Multiple board frame colours (as in Sigma 4.0).
